Before You Begin
Most of us understand what it feels like to want more.
A new season.
A clearer purpose.
A stronger relationship with God.
A healthier life.
A new opportunity.
A fresh beginning.
But Scripture teaches us that the Christian life is not simply about escaping the present in pursuit of the future. It is about learning to live faithfully in the now while staying responsive to God concerning the next.
David gives us a beautiful picture of that tension.
In 1 Samuel 16, David is not on a throne.
He is in a field.
He is not leading a nation.
He is tending sheep.
He is not standing in front of thousands.
He is worshiping in obscurity.
And while David is faithfully living in his now, God is already moving in his next.
Samuel is being sent.
Oil is being prepared.
A word is being spoken.
A future is being revealed.
But even after the anointing, David does not immediately become king. He has to keep living.
Keep serving.
Keep growing.
Keep waiting.
Keep preparing.
That is often how God works.
He reveals before He releases.
He anoints before He appoints.
He speaks before He shifts.
So for the next six days, we are going to ask one question:
What is your next? - Not your fantasy. - Not somebody else’s life. - Not a rushed version of your future.
But the next faithful step God may be calling you toward.

DAY 1 — DON’T DESPISE YOUR NOW

Devotional — The Field Is Not Wasted Time
It is easy to resent a season that looks smaller than what you believe God has placed inside you.
David was anointed for a throne.
But before the throne came the field.
Before leadership came sheep.
Before public influence came private faithfulness.
The field did not look impressive.
But it was not wasted.
In that field David learned courage.
He learned responsibility.
He learned worship.
He learned how to protect what had been entrusted to him.
He learned how to fight lions and bears long before he ever stood in front of Goliath.
Your now may not look like your dream.
But that does not mean God is absent from it.
Sometimes the place you want to escape is the place God is using to prepare you.
That does not mean every difficult circumstance is directly assigned by God.
But it does mean He is able to form you faithfully in the middle of whatever season you are walking through.
So stop calling your field insignificant.
If God is with you there, it matters.
Prayer
Father, teach me to honor the season I am in. Forgive me for despising places You may be using to shape me. Make me faithful with what is already in my hands. Give me gratitude for today without losing holy expectation for tomorrow. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Activation
Ask yourself:
What is God teaching me in my current season that I might need in my next one?
Write down three things.

My now is not wasted. God is forming me here. I will be faithful in the field while trusting Him with the throne.

DAY 2 — LISTEN IN YOUR NOW

Devotional — Can You Hear God From Where You Are?
One of the strongest questions from this message is:
What was the last thing God told you to do?
And then:
Did you do it?
We often ask God for fresh direction while ignoring previous obedience.
We want a new word.
A new assignment.
A new opportunity.
But sometimes the greatest barrier to clarity is not God’s silence.
It is our inattention.
David was not wasting his now.
He was worshiping.
He was walking with God.
He was learning the voice of the One who would later guide him through caves, battles, leadership, failure, repentance, and kingship.
Your next is usually not discovered by panicking about the future.
It is discovered by walking closely with God in the present.
If you are not talking with Him in your now, it becomes much harder to discern what He may be saying about your next.
So slow your soul down enough to hear Him.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, sharpen my hearing. Silence the noise that competes for my attention. Remind me of anything You have already spoken that I have delayed or ignored. Give me a willing heart to obey. Teach me to walk closely with You now so I can recognize Your direction when the next season comes. Amen.
Activation
Spend ten quiet minutes with God today and ask:
“Lord, is there anything You’ve already asked me to do that I haven’t done?”
Write down what comes to mind and test it against Scripture.
Declaration
I will not live spiritually distracted. I am listening for God in my now, and I will obey what He speaks.

Devotional — When God Shows You Next Before It Arrives
David received oil before he received a throne.
That matters.
God sometimes gives revelation about a future season before the future season is ready.
And the temptation is to rush.
To force.
To manipulate.
To announce prematurely.
To become frustrated that what God showed you is not happening yet.
But David did something powerful.
He received the anointing.
Then he went back to being faithful.
That is maturity.
Promise did not make him despise process.
There are things God may reveal that require preparation before possession.
Character before platform.
Wisdom before influence.
Healing before relationship.
Discipline before opportunity.
Formation before responsibility.
The delay is not always denial.
Sometimes it is development.
Prayer
Father, help me trust Your timing. If You have shown me something about my future, keep me from rushing ahead of You. Develop in me the character required to carry what You are preparing. Let promise create patience rather than pride. Amen.
Activation
Identify one area where you feel tempted to rush God.
Ask:
“What can I prepare now instead of forcing next?”
Do one practical thing.
Declaration
I will not rush what God is preparing. I can receive the promise and still respect the process. God’s timing is trustworthy.

Devotional — Canaan Still Had Giants
We often imagine “next” as a finished product.
A perfect opportunity.
A complete answer.
A door with no resistance.
But Israel entered the Promised Land and discovered that promise did not eliminate responsibility.
There were still battles.
There were still giants.
There was still work.
And Caleb, at eighty-five, was not waiting for somebody to hand him a finished mountain.
He said:
“Give me this mountain.”
Faith does not make us passive.
God’s grace does not produce laziness.
Sometimes faith gets you to the promise.
Then faith gives you the strength to work when you arrive.
A new job still requires diligence.
A restored marriage still requires communication.
A healthier life still requires discipline.
A ministry opportunity still requires preparation.
A dream still requires work.
Your next may be God-given and still require sweat.
Prayer
Lord, deliver me from expecting You to do what You have empowered me to do. Give me courage, discipline, endurance, and wisdom. When I step into something You have called me toward, help me be willing to build, learn, grow, fight, and work faithfully. Amen.
Activation
What is one practical skill, habit, or discipline your next season may require?
Start developing it today.
Declaration
I am not afraid of the work attached to the promise. If God gives me the mountain, I will climb it by faith.

Devotional — If You Have Breath, You Have Purpose
This may be the strongest pastoral word in the entire sermon.
Your end is not your next.
Age can become a voice.
It tells young people:
“You’re too young.”
It tells older people:
“Your best days are behind you.”
But Scripture refuses both lies.
God called Samuel young.
God used David young.
God called Abraham later in life.
Moses was eighty when his next major assignment began.
Caleb was eighty-five when he asked for a mountain.
The Holy Spirit does not age.
He does not become less powerful because your birthday changes.
As long as you have breath, there is still room for obedience, growth, service, prayer, influence, wisdom, worship, love, mentoring, generosity, and purpose.
Your next may look different in different seasons.
But different does not mean lesser.
Prayer
Father, break every agreement I have made with limitation that You did not speak. Whether I feel too young, too old, too inexperienced, too late, or too overlooked, remind me that You are not limited by those labels. Use every season of my life for Your glory. Amen.
Activation
Ask yourself:
“What dream, goal, ministry, relationship, or act of obedience have I dismissed because I thought it was too late?”
Pray over it again.
Declaration
I am not finished while God is still working in me. I have breath, therefore I have purpose. My end is not my next.

Devotional — Glory to Glory
The Christian life is not a static life.
Paul describes transformation as moving from glory to glory.
There is development.
Growth.
Maturity.
Becoming.
That does not mean constantly chasing novelty.
And it does not mean your current life is never enough.
It means we refuse to turn a current season into a permanent ceiling when God is still calling us to grow.
There is a balance here.
Enjoy your now.
Drink the coffee.
Watch the sunrise.
Laugh with your family.
Be present.
Thank God for where He has brought you.
But remain open.
Still dream.
Still pray.
Still learn.
Still set goals.
Still ask questions.
Still believe.
Still listen.
Still move when God says move.
We do not live obsessed with the end.
We live present in the now while remaining available for the next.
That is not restlessness.
That is faithful expectation.
Prayer
Jesus, thank You for the life You have given me. Teach me to enjoy today without idolizing comfort. Make me grateful for my now and responsive to my next. Keep me growing from glory to glory. I surrender my future to You and ask for courage to take the next faithful step when You reveal it. Amen.

Write down:
MY NOW: What has God entrusted to me today?
MY NEXT: What might God be stirring in me for the future?
MY STEP: What can I do this week to move faithfully toward it?
Declaration
I will enjoy my now, listen for my next, and trust God with the timing. I am moving from glory to glory. My life in Jesus is still alive with purpose.

FINAL WORD — THERE IS STILL A NEXT
Maybe you are in a beautiful season.
Enjoy it.
Maybe you are in a difficult season.
Do not despise it.
Maybe you feel hidden.
God knows where you are.
Maybe people forgot to invite you into the room.
God can still send Samuel to the field.
Maybe God has already spoken to you about something that has not happened yet.
Do not rush it.
Maybe you have reached an age where culture expects you to slow down and disappear.
Ask Caleb.
There may still be a mountain with your name on it.
The goal is not to become obsessed with tomorrow.
The goal is to become so close to God today that when He speaks about tomorrow, you hear Him.
So be faithful in your now.
Love people in your now.
Worship in your now.
Grow in your now.
Work in your now.
Rest in your now.
But never allow comfort to become spiritual deafness.
Because while you are tending sheep in one field—
God may already be preparing oil for your next.
Final Prayer
Father, thank You for bringing me this far. I refuse to despise where I am, and I refuse to believe this is all You can do in me. Give me ears to hear, wisdom to wait, courage to move, strength to work, and humility to trust Your timing. I surrender my now and my next to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
