Serving Before the Upper Room
DAY 1 — THE KITCHEN COMES FIRST
Scripture:
2 Kings 4:8 — The Shunammite woman saw Elisha passing by and invited him to eat.
DEVOTION
The story of the Shunammite woman doesn't begin with a miracle.
It begins with bread.
She didn't know everything about Elisha yet. She wasn't trying to receive a prophecy. She wasn't trying to get something from God.
She simply saw an opportunity to bless someone and served.
That's important because we often want God to take us to the upper room without first taking us through the kitchen.
We want the platform before the preparation.
We want the miracle before the obedience.
We want the supernatural before the serving.
But God often begins with something incredibly ordinary.
A meal.
A conversation.
A helping hand.
A door held open.
A person who needs encouragement.
Faith isn't always dramatic.
Sometimes faith looks like doing the next right thing because you love Jesus.

TODAY'S ACTION
Serve someone today without telling anyone you did it.
DAY 2 — YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE IMPORTANT
Scripture:
2 Kings 4:9–10
The woman eventually recognized Elisha as a man of God and decided to prepare a permanent place for him.
DEVOTION
The Shunammite woman wasn't looking for a title.
She wasn't trying to become famous.
Later, when Elisha offered to speak to the king on her behalf, she basically responded, “I dwell among my own people.”
She wasn't chasing prominence.
She was simply being faithful.
That's a word for us.
We live in a world that constantly tells us to build a platform, grow our influence, become known, and make sure people see what we're doing.
But the Kingdom operates differently.
God is not impressed by our visibility. He looks at our obedience.
You don't have to preach to serve.
You don't have to lead thousands to serve.
You don't have to have a microphone to serve.
You don't have to be important to be useful.
You just need to be willing.
THINK ABOUT IT
Have you ever avoided serving because the opportunity seemed too small or insignificant?
PRAYER
TODAY'S ACTION
Do one unseen act of service.
DAY 3 — USE WHAT'S ALREADY IN YOUR HAND
Scripture:
Matthew 25:21
DEVOTION
The Shunammite woman didn't wait until she had something extraordinary.
She used what she already had.
She had bread.
So she baked bread.
That's the principle.
You may not have someone else's resources.
You may not have someone else's platform.
You may not have someone else's building, budget, gifting, personality, or opportunity.
But God didn't ask you to use what they have.
He asked you to be faithful with what you have.
Maybe you can encourage.
Maybe you can cook.
Maybe you can organize.
Maybe you can give.
Maybe you can listen.
Maybe you can pray.
Maybe you can open your home.
Maybe you can simply show up when someone needs you.
Stop asking:
“What do I have that is impressive?”
Start asking:
“What do I have that God can use?”

Write down three things God has already placed in your hands that you can use to bless someone else.
DAY 4 — FAITH IS PROACTIVE
Scripture:
2 Kings 4:8
DEVOTION
Elisha didn't have to beg this woman for bread.
She was ready.
Every time he passed by, she had something prepared.
That's proactive faith.
She didn't wait for a sign from heaven.
She didn't need an angel to appear.
She didn't need someone to give her a prophetic word saying:
She simply saw an opportunity and responded.
Sometimes we're waiting for God to tell us what He has already told us to do.
We have Scripture.
We have His commands.
We know we're called to love.
We know we're called to serve.
We know we're called to give.
We know we're called to encourage.
We know we're called to make disciples.
We don't always need another sign.
Sometimes we just need to get busy.
PRAYER
TODAY'S ACTION
Don't wait for someone to ask. Find someone you can help and help them.
DAY 5 — STOP COMPARING YOUR BREAD TO THEIR ARK
Scripture:
Galatians 6:4–5
DEVOTION
Noah built an ark.
The Shunammite woman baked bread.
Both were obedient.
That's the part we miss.
Sometimes we look at what God is doing through someone else and assume we're falling behind.
“They have a bigger church.”
“They have a bigger ministry.”
“They have more influence.”
“They're doing something incredible.”
But God isn't asking you to build their ark.
He's asking you to bake your bread.
Your obedience doesn't become less valuable because someone else's assignment looks bigger.
The Kingdom isn't built by one giant assignment.
It's built by millions of ordinary acts of obedience.
Your faithfulness matters.
Your serving matters.
Your little assignment matters.

TODAY'S ACTION
Celebrate someone else's obedience today without comparing it to your own.
DAY 6 — THE KITCHEN PREPARES THE UPPER ROOM
Scripture:
Mark 10:45
DEVOTION
Jesus Himself modeled the kitchen.
The Son of God washed feet.
He touched people others avoided.
He stopped for people others overlooked.
He served.
The King became a servant.
And if Jesus was willing to serve, we cannot make ourselves too important to do the same.
The Shunammite woman's upper room didn't begin upstairs.
It began downstairs.
It began with bread.
It began with hospitality.
It began with faithfulness.
And eventually that same room became a place of revelation and resurrection.
Here's the challenge:
Don't despise your kitchen.
The season you're in may not be your destination.
It may be your preparation.
God may be teaching you humility.
God may be developing your character.
God may be teaching you how to love people.
God may be teaching you how to serve when nobody applauds.
Because before God trusts us with the upper room, He often develops us in the kitchen.
PRAYER
FINAL CHALLENGE
Ask yourself:
“What am I doing in my kitchen?”
Then do it.
